7 Questions to Ask Before You Sign an RV Insurance Policy

A few extra questions before you sign can save you from an unpleasant surprise the first time you actually file a claim.

1. Is this replacement cost or actual cash value?

Confirm which one you're getting, and for how long replacement cost applies if it's included. This single detail affects your payout more than almost any other policy term.

2. Does this policy know how I actually use my RV?

Weekend use, seasonal snowbird trips, and full-time living all call for different coverage. Make sure your agent knows your real usage pattern — not just what's typical for your RV type.

3. Are my personal belongings covered, and up to what limit?

Electronics, clothing, gear, and furnishings inside your RV typically need their own coverage limit. Ask what that limit is and whether it's enough for what you'd actually have to replace.

4. Are attached structures included?

Awnings, decks, skirting, and steps at a seasonal site are often treated as separate items. If you've added any, make sure they're scheduled on the policy — not assumed to be covered.

5. What roadside assistance is actually included?

Towing a disabled 35-foot motorhome is a different job than towing a sedan. Confirm your roadside assistance is rated for your RV's size and weight, not a generic auto add-on.

6. Can I bundle this with my auto or home policy?

Ask directly about multi-policy discounts. It's one of the more common ways to lower your total insurance cost, and it's easy to miss if you're shopping RV coverage in isolation.

7. How fast can I get proof of insurance?

If you're picking up your RV from a dealership, ask how quickly they can turn around a certificate of insurance. Same-day turnaround shouldn't be unusual — if an agency can't commit to that, it's worth asking why.
